Intent

At Compass Point Primary, we recognise and value the importance of science in helping children understand the world around them. Our aim is to deliver an exciting, practical and inclusive science curriculum that inspires curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. Using the Plymouth Science scheme, we follow the National Curriculum to ensure pupils gain secure scientific knowledge alongside the enquiry skills needed to apply their learning in practical and meaningful ways.

We want our children to see science as relevant and exciting, making clear links between their learning and the wider world. By highlighting the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), we aim to open children’s eyes to the variety of future career opportunities available to them, regardless of gender, background or ability. Every child at Compass Point has an equal opportunity to succeed, explore, question and develop a lifelong passion for scientific enquiry.

Implementation

Science is taught discretely through carefully sequenced topic blocks from the Plymouth Science scheme, ensuring continuity and progression of knowledge and skills from EYFS to Year 6. Lessons are designed to be hands-on, engaging and challenging, encouraging pupils to work scientifically by observing, investigating, questioning and reasoning.

Teachers explicitly teach and model scientific vocabulary and enquiry skills, providing opportunities for children to use equipment, collect data, and draw conclusions with increasing independence. Prior learning is revisited at the start of each topic to strengthen understanding and address misconceptions.

Our inclusive approach ensures that all pupils, including those with different needs, are supported and challenged appropriately so that everyone can participate fully in scientific learning.

Impact

At Compass Point, our science curriculum develops confident, curious learners who can think critically, ask questions and make informed decisions about the world around them. Children demonstrate a secure understanding of key scientific concepts and can apply their knowledge and skills across contexts.

By the time pupils leave Compass Point, they are well-prepared for the next stage of their education and have developed an awareness of how science connects to future study and careers in STEM fields. Our aspirational approach ensures that all children see themselves as capable scientists and understand that science is for everyone.
