Special Educational Needs and DISABILITIES

Compass Point is an inclusive school and we work in partnership to support children with special education needs and disabilities.

Calendar of Bristol SEND events for parents

Children make progress at different rates and have different ways in which they learn best. Teachers take account of this in the way they organise and adapt their lessons for the needs of different children. Children making slower progress or having particular difficulties in one area may be given extra help or adaptions to help them succeed.

We work collaboratively with education, health and social care professionals and can make referrals to specialist support teams. There are multiple agencies that offer support for parents, see calendar above.

If you have any concerns regarding your child then please speak to your class teacher in the first instance. They are available daily at the end of school and can arrange a meeting with you to review and discuss any concerns.

Compass Point have members of staff who are responsible for co-ordinating special education needs (SENDCO).  Please contact Miss Gilder and/or Miss McMahon through the office or by emailing SEND@compasspoint.excalibur.org.uk

What is SEND?

A child has special educational needs (SEND) if they have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn than most other children of about the same age.

The main categories of special educational needs are as follows:

Communication and Interaction

Where children and young people have speech, language and communication difficulties which make it difficult for them to make sense of language or to understand how to communicate effectively and appropriately with others.

Children and young people with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder are likely to have particular challenges with communication and interaction.

Cognition and Learning

Where children and young people learn at a slower pace than others their age, they may:

  • have difficulty in understanding parts of the curriculum
  • have difficulties with organisation and memory skills
  • have a specific difficulty affecting one particular part of their learning such as in English and Maths

Social, Emotional and Mental Health

Children and young people may experience a wide range of social and emotional challenges which present themselves in many ways. They may:

  •  have challenges in managing their relationships with other people
  •  behave in ways that may hinder their and other children’s learning or that have an impact on their health and well-being

Sensory and/or Physical

Where children and young people have sensory or physical needs, they may need support typically for visual and/or hearing.   Some children may need further physical support.

SEND at Compass Point

We are a one form entry mainstream primary school with a specialist resource base for children with an Education, Health Care Plan (EHCP) and a diagnosis of autism or  social communication needs. We are a fully inclusive  and integrated school where our resource base classes learn and play with mainstream peers where possible.
