Geography

Intent

At Compass Point Primary School, our geography curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and inspire a fascination with the world and its people. We aim to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to explore, question, and investigate real-world issues, developing a secure understanding of diverse places, environments, and the physical and human processes that shape them.

Bristol’s rich and varied landscapes provide an ideal setting for geographical learning. We use our local area as a living classroom, enabling pupils to make sense of their surroundings and see geography in action. Fieldwork and practical experiences are included in our teaching approach, giving children the opportunity to apply their knowledge and develop essential geographical skills in meaningful, real-world contexts.

Key geographical vocabulary is carefully planned and explicitly taught, helping pupils communicate their ideas accurately and confidently. This foundation not only supports learning across the wider curriculum but also allows pupils to apply their understanding to new and unfamiliar situations.

Through thinking geographically, children at Compass Point develop a deeper understanding of their place in the world. Our approach aims to cultivate global awareness, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility for the planet and its people, preparing all pupils to become thoughtful, informed citizens of the future.
