Languages
“With languages, you are at home anywhere.”
― Edward De Waal
We are very fortunate to have lots of children and staff who speak a wide range of languages. Throughout the school all children have the chance to learn elements of French; particularly key vocabulary and conversational phrases. We also have lunch time clubs for children who want to learn Spanish. We have chosen these languages as they are the two main languages studied in our local secondary schools.
Children in Early Years and KS1
We celebrate the many languages our children already know by encouraging our children to greet people in different languages. We enjoy singing songs and playing games in different languages. Our aim is to open our children’s minds to different languages and give them the confidence to have a go. Merci et au revoir!
Children in KS2
In year 3 and 4 we teach French in short bursts throughout the week. The children are encouraged to embrace a new language and practice their vocabulary when the opportunity arises.
Children in year 5 and 6 have a dedicated French lesson every week with our specialist French speaking teacher. The topics covered are: weather, colours, food, family and body parts as well as learning to count. Children build their vocabulary and conversational skills through a range of activities such as playing French games, singing songs and sharing French food. In 2020 we are also hoping to twin with a French school to give the children an opportunity to have a French pen pal and find out about life in France – exciting!
