Compass Point Primary School's Academy Committee

Compass Point Primary School is lucky to have dedicated, conscientious and effective team of governors to help us on our journey. School Governors are volunteers who help run our school and work to:

-Set the strategic direction of the school with the Headteacher,

-Provide support and challenge to the Headteacher to account for performance of the school.

The school leadership and governors meet regularly as a governing body.

At Compass Point we encourage our governors to take an active role in the life of the school.  We welcome them in to visit classes, to work with children, and to talk with staff.

The school governors can be contacted by leaving a message at the school office or by emailing the Clerk to Governors via the following email address: lgbclerk@compasspoint.excalibur.org.uk

Below you will find information regarding our current School Governors and information about the Academy Committee.

What is a Community Governor?

A Community Governor is an individual from the community who has the skills and experience which the governing board requires.

What is the role of a Community Governor?

Being a school governor is a chance to experience leadership at board level at any point in one’s career. The role provides individuals with the opportunity to develop and hone strategic skills such as negotiation, influencing and teamwork.  The Academy Committee work as a team to support and challenge the Headteacher.

Volunteers need to be dedicated people who care about improving education, but they do not need prior board experience. It makes the role perfect for professionals looking to improve their business and leadership skills, give back to society and enhance children’s futures.

Governors are responsible for overseeing the management side of a school: strategy, policy, budgeting and staffing. They enable their school to run as effectively as possible, working alongside senior leaders and supporting teachers to provide excellent education to children.

Being a school governor is a commitment to attending governing body meetings which consider issues such as setting the school vision, mitigating financial risk and scrutinising educational outcomes. They are also involved in the school community, acting as critical friends to the headteacher and senior leaders.

Governors bring a wide range of skills and expertise from their professional lives to the Academy Committee and schools benefit greatly from working with skilled volunteers, for example anyone with experience of finance, law, premises management, human resources or business.

Currently, the Academy Committee meets four times per year.  Meetings usually take place at 5.30 pm for no longer than two hours.

In addition, there are two Immersion Day Visits, where Governors come in to the school during the school day together to look at what it is like to attend the school through the lens of a child.

Each Academy Committee meeting will require Governors to read some reports in advance in order to be able to ask questions at the meeting.

Governors can also hold link roles and responsibilities and regularly check-in with a linked staff member to find out how things really are in school, and report back their findings at the next Academy Committee meeting.
