Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Public Sector Equality Duty (Updated December 2025)

The Equality Act 2010 requires all public sector organisations to demonstrate that they have due regard for the need to:

Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010

Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it

Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.

Compass Point Primary School is an inclusive school where we celebrate differences, focus on the well-being and progress of every child and where all members of our community are valued.

We believe that the Equality Act provides a framework to support our commitment to valuing diversity, tackling discrimination, promoting equality and fostering good relationships between people. It also ensures that we continue to provide support and challenge where there is disadvantage and underachievement of different groups.

Our approach to equality is based on the following key principles:

1. All learners are of equal value

2. We recognise, respect and celebrate difference

3. We foster positive attitudes and relationships and a shared sense of belonging.

4. We observe good equalities practice in staff recruitment, retention and development.

5. We aim to recognise and then reduce and remove inequalities and barriers.

6. We have the highest aspirations and expectations of all our children.

 

Protected characteristics

The Equality Act 2010 protects people from discrimination on the basis of protected characteristics. Every person has several of the protected characteristics, so the Act protects everyone against unfair treatment. In order to ensure that all pupils are protected from discrimination, the school collects information on protected characteristics.

In addition to pupils with protected characteristics, we gather further information on the following groups of pupils:

Pupils eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) and the Pupil Premium

Pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or disabilities(SEND)

Pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Young carers

Looked after children

 

Eliminating discrimination

We work to eliminate discrimination by:

Ensuring that equalities is a core part of our school’s ethos and values

Our behaviour/relationships policy ensuring that all children feel safe at school

Reporting, responding to and monitoring of any incidents which have prejudice as their main cause e.g. homophobic, racist behaviours etc…

Regularly monitoring the curriculum to ensure that it meets the needs of our pupils and that it promotes respect for diversity and challenges stereotyping

Teaching is of the highest quality to ensure children reach their potential

Rigorously tracking pupil achievement to ensure that all children learn more, and intervening when necessary

Ensuring that all pupils have opportunities for enrichment activities and to build their ‘cultural capital’

Listening to and monitoring views and experiences of pupils and adults to evaluate the effectiveness of our policies and procedures.

 

Equality objectives 2025-2028

At Compass Point Primary school we are committed to ensuring equality of education and opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents and carers, irrespective of race, gender, disability, belief, religion or socio-economic background.

The Principal and the Academy Committee will update the equality 
information published annually.  The equality objectives will be reviewed annually by the Principal and the Academy Committee and updated every 4 years.

 

Objective 1: To monitor and analyse pupil achievement by race, gender and disability and act on any trends or patterns in the data that require additional support for pupils.

How We Have Met Our Equality Objective 1:

All pupils, including those with SEND, have access to a well-structured and ambitious curriculum. Staff use assessment information to  track carefully, progress and identify where support or intervention is needed. Adaptations are made thoughtfully, and support is closely aligned to individual needs. High expectations are maintained for every child, helping ensure that all pupils, regardless of background, are supported to achieve well.

 

Objective 2: To ensure there is fair representation of a diverse range of people within our wider school curriculum.

How We Have Met Our Equality Objective 2:

All pupils, including those with SEND, have access to a well-structured and ambitious curriculum. Subject Leads review the curriculum every year to ensure the curriculum maintains a diverse range of people. The PHSE Lead also reviews the enrichment calendar to ensure the same. 

 

Objective 3: To ensure that staff within the school are given high quality professional development so they better understand the equality agenda

How We Have Met Our Equality Objective 3:
CPD to address the equality agenda is part of the regular Trust training that staff complete at the start of the year. In 2025-26, additional training is scheduled for the Trust INSET Day on Monday 20th April 2026. SLT review training on a yearly basis. 

 

Objective 4: To review levels of parental and pupil engagement in learning and school life, across all activities to ensure equity and fairness in access and engagement.

How We Have Met Our Equality Objective 4:
Pupil engagement is monitored throughout the year. Children's voice is regularly collected and reviewed by the Head of Pastoral. Children's voice is collected through a yearly questionnaire. In addition, regular forums for children's representatives occur throughout the year. House Captains, Prefects, School Council and Librarians all regularly feedback to staff and SLT monitors this. School attendance is improving in 2025-26 and shows improved engagement across year groups. 

Parental engagement is ensured through regular parental voice. This includes regular contact with the PTFA and regular Parental Forums. Parents are regularly invited into assemblies and the school runs regular Parents' Evenings throughout the year. Parents are consulted when there are policy changes, e.g. Behaviour Policy. Further, there is a Parental Questionnaire which is reviewed by Governors and by SLT.
