Curriculum Intent

We believe that Art and Design stimulate creativity and imagination. By taking part in Art and Design we enable our children to have visual, tactile and sensory experiences . We see Art and Design as a way of helping children to understand and respond to the world around them. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

Our children explore ideas and meanings through the work of a range of artists and designers; they explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. We know that the appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches our lives; we aim to foster a lifelong love of art within all of our children. .

Our aims

To enable children to record from first- hand experience and from imagination, and to select their own ideas to use in their work;

To develop creativity and imagination through a range of activities;
To improve the children’s ability to control materials, tools and techniques;
To increase their critical awareness of the roles and purposes of art and design in different times and cultures;
To develop increasing confidence in the use of visual and tactile experiences;
To foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists, architects, craftspeople and designers.
They should also know how Art and Design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Curriculum Implementation

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Our curriculum

We have our own bespoke Art and Design Studio which can be used for the whole class teaching of Art and Design
The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Compass Point Primary School is based on the National Curriculum. Where appropriate, Art and Design are taught as part of our topics e.g. portraiture when studying The Tudors, WW2 propaganda posters etc..
In addition we have an annual Arts week where there is a whole school theme eg Art and the Environment, Art and maths etc.. During these weeks children are given the opportunity for collaborative working and exploring the different styles and techniques of a range of artists. Children are also given.opportunities to work with artists, to visit galleries, to plan and create their own individual and class art works.
We visit local galleries and museums on a regular basis
We have a close link with the Bristol Museum where we worked together on a Art amd English project
We actively take part in community events including The South Bristol Arts trail and the Bedminster Lantern Parade
The work of famous local, national and international artists are explored to enhance the children's learning.

Early Years Foundation Stage

Pupils explore and use a variety of media and materials through a combination of child initiated and adult directed activities. They have opportunities to learn to:

Explore the textures, movement, feel and look of different media and materials
Respond to a range of media and materials, develop their understanding of them in order to manipulate and create different effects.
Use different media and materials to express their own ideas
Explore colour and use for a particular purpose
Develop skills to use simple tools and techniques competently and appropriately
Select appropriate media and techniques and adapt their work where necessary

Key stage 1

Pupils are taught:

To use a range of materials creatively to design and make products
To use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
To develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space
About the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

Key stage 2

Pupils are taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.

Pupils are taught:

To create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]
About great artists, architects and designers in history.

Curriculum Impact

Our children are encouraged to become more discerning in their appreciation of art and to know what they like and do not yet like. We teach them to see that Art is used as both mirror and window to the world and that Art is an incredibly important part of culture and society. We seek to enable children to explore the links between Art and other areas of the wider curriculum so they better understand the works of famous artists as well as enabling them to improve their own artwork.

As our children move through the school they will become more proficient with using different media and tools, they will also be better able to articulate their own processes and products.
